The Forbiddance of Adultery in Islam

One of the major sins condemned by Islam is adultery. It is one of the greatest sins in the eyes of Islam, anyone who commits this sin has done a grievous deed, and he or she needs to be punished for this deed.

Islam condemns adultery and regards it as an evil the breeds further evils in the society. Regarding committing of adultery, Allah Almighty says in Quran:

“Do not go near to adultery. Surely it is a shameful deed and evil, opening roads (to other evils).” (17:32)

From this ayah of Quran it is clear that a Muslim, regardless of the gender must refrain from adultery as it is one of the most evil and shameful deeds. Moreover, besides being evil in itself, adultery also breeds other evils. Therefore, adultery does not end at adultery, rather its starts a circle of new evils, therefore, a Muslim must refrain from it in any case.

In another ayah of Quran, Allah Almighty says:

“Say, Verily my Lord has prohibited the shameful deeds, be it open or secret, sins and trespasses against the truth and reason.” (7:23)

From this ayah of Quran it is evident that Allah the Great has prohibited all kinds of shameful deeds. Therefore, those who commit adultery either open or in secret go against the commandment of Allah Almighty and trespass the limitations set by Allah. Hence for a Muslim it is imperative to refrain from a sin such as adultery.

Committing adultery is becoming non-pious, therefore, who die in a non-pious state are the one who have the fire of hell waiting for them in the afterlife. On the other hand, who refrain from adultery are the ones who are pious and they have greater reward in the afterlife. Allah says in Quran:

“Those whose lives the angels take while they are in a pious state saying (to them): Peace be on you, enter you Paradise because of that (the good) which you used to do (in the world).” (16:32)

In short, it is imperative that a Muslim refrains from adultery and tries to live life in accordance with the laws laid down by Allah Almighty so that he or she could prosper in both the worlds.
